I have a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and history of science and mathematics and a Master of Science in marine science. For over 25 years my work has focused on building ocean literacy, environmental literacy, and science literacy among K-12 and informal education audiences to build community resilience to climate change and public support for a healthy, thriving ocean.

In May 2025, I retired from the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of Education where I co-led the agency’s Environmental Literacy Program (ELP). During my two decades in that role, ELP provided grants and other support to prepare children, youth, and adults to become change agents for improving ecosystem health and increasing climate resilience in their communities.
I have also been a leader in a global movement to increase Ocean Literacy since 2004, beginning with identifying the fundamental concepts to be taught in grades K-12 to the adoption of these concepts nationally and internationally for use within both formal and informal education. I continue to support global ocean literacy as a vice-chair of the National Marine Educators Association's Ocean Literacy Committee.
